Next up for Hawkins: RFG
By rick | July 24, 2008
Attorney general Jack Conway is busy investigating the issue of high gas prices in Jefferson County, trying to find a bad guy to blame for the way the area’s gas prices are around a quarter a gallon more than nearby counties. Some in government, including Mayor Jerry Abramson, put the blame on the EPA requirement that gas sold in Jefferson County is reformulated, or RFG.
Metro Councilman Doug Hawkins is getting behind that idea because he thinks it may be a big part of the problem. And though the Governor said earlier this month that he’s looking into getting the requirement lifted, it must be a really tempting issue for Hawkins to jump on.
According to a resolution Hawkins will introduce this morning, the RFG requirement mandated in 1993 is voluntary, and Gov. Steve Beshear could exercise his power to end the RFG mandate. Hawkins’ resolution claims the RFG requirement offers no environmental benefits and that the techology behind it is dated.
In a press conference July 2, Beshear said he would talk with federal EPA offiicals to see if the requirement was necessary.
Unlike Hawkins’ ongoing efforts regarding a bomb-storage unit, the idea of actually doing something to make gas less expensive will be universally popular both inside and outside of District 25. The Hawkins press conference starts at 10.
