Media Layoffs in Paducah

By rick | July 24, 2008

Cutting back on personnel in media isn’t a local phenomenon, and it’s not happening just at large city newspapers.

Today we learn that the Paxton Media Group, owner of WPSD-TV in Paducah and newspapers throughout western Kentucky, has laid off up to three dozen employees in light of declining revenue from advertisers and a weakening subscriber base.

Of course, there’s always an opportunity for humor in media. The West Kentucky report included this gem of a sentence, detailing the difficulties in getting newspapers delivered.

One rural resident who had trained his dog to get his paper every morning joked that the dog just looks confused with no Paducah Sun to bring to the house.

According to the West Kentucky Journal of Politics and Issues, subscription levels have decreased dramatically at newspapers throughout the region, starting with the Paducah Sun. Officials there aren’t talking with media about the layoffs, using the old “personnel matters” excuse. However, a radio station reports that 7 WPSD staffers, including reporter Daisy O’Donnell, have been laid off. O’Donnell had been there since January.

WPSD-TV has launched the on-air careers of several local personalities over the years, including WHAS-TV anchor Gary Roedemeier.
